The Benefit Concert
held in aid of the Tibetan Refugee Settlement in Gajapati, Orissa

The following letter of thanks was received on 10 July 2007 from Sonam Palmo, Sponsorship Incharge
of Rigon Thupten Mindolling Monastery in Orissa, India

Dear Semo Palkyi la,

Tashi Deleg, I hope you are fine at your blissful place. Here, everybody is fine as always. This is Sonam Palmo, Sponsorship Incharge of Rigon Thupten Mindolling Monastery, Orissa and I would like to inform you regarding the money you sent for the poor and sick people. We received your Indian Rupees 149096/- on 5th July 2007. On behalf of all those here, I extend my deepest thanks for all your benevolent works and help. Your concern, warm feelings and generosity are always appreciated by all of us. Thank you! Also, I was asked by Jigme Rinpoche to send these photos and details about the one you sponsor, his door and windows. I’m sending pictures of his house. His is the poorest family among all the camps. He is from Camp No 5, House No 127. In this house only the son, his father and daughter live there.

Details about Father: His name is Topgyal, he is 82 years old and lost his wife in the yr 2004 from asthma. He has little sight in his eyes and is unable to walk properly. He has one son called Tsundue who is 39 yr old. He too lost his wife in the yr 1997. He has one daughter, presently studying in S.O.S Bylakuppe, Standard III. The condition of the house is so horrible. Though he built his house in the yr 2004 with financial support from the Tibetan Govt., it’s unfinished and he is unable to meet the expenses for completion of all the work with such a little amount. So, recently he approached His Eminence Jetrul Jigme Rinpoche for help and Rinpoche has approved his request. Should any need arise in the future, I shall be most glad to serve you. Thank you once again!

With best regards,
Sonam Palmo (Sponsorship Incharge)

Benefiz-Konzert
vom 7. Oktober 2006 im Volkshaus Zürich

Tibetische Lieder zwischen Tradition und Pop

Rund 300-400 Leute verfolgten am Samstagabend,

Tibetan songs from traditional to pop

Approximately 300 to 400 people attended Sonam Palkyi's Benefit Concert on Saturday evening, 7th October 2006, in the White Hall of the Community Centre of Switzerland. The audience was greatly inspired by Sonam's pure and golden voice and by the songs she sang with such enthusiasm. The programme played on the tension between soft sounds and pop highlights. The audience were transported by the music's traditional elements into Tibet's distant past, and then returned rapidly to the present. Additional colour was added to the concert by the lively contributions from Mr Palden Dhakyel and Mr Tenzin Chüyang - who were applauded with great enthusiasm - and enhanced by Tibetan costume and dance routines.

Sonam was inspired to hold this concert by her uncle, His Eminence Namkha Trimed Rinpoche, who recently said on the telephone to her: "You have now reached the point in your career where you must know for what purpose you wish to use your voice". Sonam's mother grew up in the refugee camp in Orissa, therefore Sonam was already aware at a young age of the difficult life faced by many of the refugees there, and had an early desire to make a contribution in order to improve the living conditions of the Tibetans in Orissa. Thus the foundation-stone was laid for this benefit concert for the support of poor and aged, single people in the refugee camp in Orissa.

In particular the precarious situation of some unmarried, elderly people who cannot depend on the support of their family. Since there is no state benefit in India, it is traditional that children and grandchildren care for the elders of the family and provide for their living costs. The lives of elderly people become very difficult, if they have no more relatives able to offer support. They are hardly able to find enough money themselves for food and living expenses. In addition, illness often comes with age and these people do not have the money to pay for medical treatment.

An example is Choeying Dolma. She has health problems with her kidneys, which could be improved with medical treatment. Choeying Dolma however cannot afford an operation. Kunga Choedon is an older woman, who has no relatives other than her handicapped daughter Tseten Youdon. Choedon is seriously ill, has nobody to take care of her and also does not have enough money to see a doctor. Recently, while speaking with His Eminence Namkha Rinpoche, Sonam heard of another poor person who wanted to contribute to a puja but did not even have enough money to make a donation.

Further donations for the support of single, elderly people in Orissa would be greatly appreciated. For further information please contact info@yeshekhando.net or call 0041 (0)71 923 49 26.

We thank you!
